John Chen studied at Shanghai Art School as a high school student, and finished study at Fine Art College of Shanghai Normal University with a bachelor’s degree in early 80’ s. He did post graduate study in a class for lecturers of Art Colleges at Central Fine Art Academy (now Art College of Qin Hua University) in mid 80's.
He worked as an art director for a newspaper group in Shanghai , as well as taught life drawing and creative painting practice in Fine Art Faculty of Shanghai Teacher’s Training Institute, Design College of China Textile University, Architectural College of Tong Ji University and Fine Art College of East China Normal University. He was a well known young artist in the artist's community in Shanghai and was regarded as one of the brightest and most hopeful young artist by his mentor professor Lide Jin who was well respected and highly recognized artist and art educator in Shanghai and many parts of China.
He came to Sydney and became a full time artist at 1989, and has done thousands of commissioned portrait drawings, caricatures and portraits. In the early 90’ s, He worked alongside of Jiawei Shen（沈嘉蔚）who was commissioned by Princess Mary, John Howard and other famous Australian, and an extremely well known realistic artist both in China and Australia.
John Chen’s teacher professor Lide Jing 金立德, whose art works are shown in this web site and are great for serious art collectors, was the president of Fine Art College of East China Normal University, vice-president of Watercolour Artists’ Association of China and one of the most recognized artists in Shanghai and China.
John Chen is now the operator of JohnChen Gallery who does most of the daily orders.
John Chen was doing the drawing demonstration among a group of art enthusiasts. The photographer Wang Yi, (in the picture taking photos) has enter Achibald many times and one of the best in portrait painting circle in Australia.
John was very impreesed by Jiawei Shen's devotion to his art and the incredible talent and skill he expressed thought his master pieces.
